You know that exercise is good for you. You might even know why it’s good for you. But do you know how it’s good for you? That’s where exercise science comes in.

Skills and Opportunities in Exercise Science

The exercise science discipline is about improving health through nutrition and physical conditioning. When you study the science behind body movement, you can help people live healthier lives. Upon graduation, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand how diet affects the body
  • Diagnose and treat injuries
  • Teach people how to prevent future injuries
  • Condition the body to perform at its optimal level
  • Understand the basics of movement and coordination of the body’s parts and systems to improve health and performance

The exercise science program at St. Thomas Aquinas College is comprised of a biology core, a kinesiology (the study of human movement) sequence and a sports and program sequence. The biology core will give you a solid foundation in science. Kinesiology courses will include personal wellness, aerobic and anaerobic exercise, stress management, and adapted exercise, which will be taught, in part, within the College's expanded Kraus Fitness Center. Your sports and program courses will focus on sports psychology, health and physical fitness, and organization and administration, to name a few. You will also be required to complete an internship in exercise science.

Careers in Exercise Science

Exercise science graduates find success in careers as athletic trainers, personal trainers, fitness managers, coaches, physicians, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation specialists, physical and occupational therapists, and much more.
