St. Thomas Aquinas College hosted a series of STEM camps in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics areas during the summer.

Residential Camp
Registration Fee: $275

Fee includes 3 college credits, meals, and residence hall accommodations for Sunday-Friday camp.
Minimal fee may apply for some after class activities.

The SUEZ Leadership Institute for Environmental Studies at St. Thomas Aquinas College is a pre-college camp intended for students who will be High School Seniors and College Freshmen in the Fall of 2017. The Institute offers students a unique opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to create positive change on environmental issues in their own local communities and the planet as a whole, while earning 3 college credits. 

The application deadline is April 15, 2017. Any applications submitted after April 15th will be considered on a space available basis.

Summer STEM Camps
For Middle School Level Students

 St. Thomas Aquinas College will run  five separate STEM summer camps. Any student attending at least one of these camps also has the opportunity attend the field trip to the Museum of Mathematics tentatively scheduled for Friday afternoon, August 4, in New York City.  

This series of STEM Camps is supported by Orange & Rockland. 


The mathematics of art AT ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE

For Middle School Students
Monday, July 10, 2017 through Friday, July 14, 2017
9:00AM - 12:30PM
Cost: $275

Students in this camp will explore key mathematical ideas such as symmetry, ratio, proportion and geometric reasoning through art. Students will be actively involved in hands-on activities, as well as technology-based activities, designed to promote 2D and 3D spatial reasoning. Students will study art from diverse cultures to investigate topics such as tessellations, fractals, and origami. The camp is appropriate for upper elementary school students, as well as middle school students.

Forensic Science Camp at St. Thomas Aquinas College

For Middle School Students
Monday, July 17, 2017 through Friday, July 21, 2017
9:00AM - 3:00PM
Cost: $400

Students will have the opportunity to develop their interest in the practices of scientific inquiry by: working in newly renovated, state-of-the-art college science labs; using appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret data; thinking critically and logically; communicating scientific procedures and explanations; and using mathematics in scientific exploration. Students will solve a “Who Done It?” case and present their findings on the last day. Students are asked to bring a cell phone (to document evidence) and a flash drive (to store their final presentation).

ROBOTICS CAMP AT ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE

Robotics is the science and technology of robots, their design, manufacture, and applications. It requires a working knowledge of electronics, software, and mechanics.  Students attending the Robotics Summer Camp will build, program, and use their own robot.  Each participant will receive a robotics kit, and at the end of the camp they will take home their own working robot. The projects include: building a robot, programming a robot to perform specific movements, and expanding the robot’s capabilities so that it can interact with the world by using an ultrasound sensor. Students will use a 3-D printer to personalize their robots. The Robotics Camp will culminate with a robotics showcase where students can demonstrate their own robot.

ENVIRONMENT SCIENCE CAMP AT ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE

For Middle School Students
Monday, July 31, 2017 through Friday, August 4th
9:00AM - 2:30PM (with 12:30PM dismissal on August 4th)
Cost: $350

Students will immerse themselves, both physically and mentally, in the local ecosystem surrounding St. Thomas Aquinas College.  Classroom activities will include topics such as understanding the interactions that exist between organisms and their physical environment, the effects of various environmental factors on the growth and health within an ecosystem, and investigations on how human populations use resources in the environment. In the field, students will utilize the Sparkill Creek to determine water quality and the population of the creek in multiple locations around campus. Soil sampling and other related activities will enable students to gain an awareness of the complex ecosystem surrounding the college. Finally, students will participate in a creek cleanup and will see first-hand the impact humans have in the environment.

HOW TO WIN AT GAMES CAMP AT ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE

9:00AM - 2:30PM (with 12:30PM dismissal on August 4th)
Cost: $275


This camp will be a Combinatorics Camp and will cover permutations and multiplication principles; combinations and their application; probability; Binomial Theorem; Tesseract; spherical mathematics; and Game Theory.  A quiz show with prizes will be held on the final day. The students will play with number cubes, shapes, teams, and, in the process, will learn how to work with and understand the probabilities that show up in games, math class, and news reports.
