Dear Students:

St. Thomas Aquinas College was founded as a teacher education institution in 1952. Since that time nearly half of all graduates have been students earning a teaching degree or fulfilling requirements to be certified in a subject area (Gr. 7-12). Nearly 400 students each year study in the Teacher Education Division on the undergraduate and graduate levels. St. Thomas is now listed with the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE) after an extensive visit and review of our programs.

Our mission is to prepare educators who are informed decision-makers who create effective learning opportunities for all students. We strive to develop knowledgeable, caring educators who have a passion for learning and who can develop that passion in their students. Our graduates possess a high level of content area knowledge and skills that allow them to apply their knowledge in their vocation as teachers. They effectively promote learning through a socially mediated process that supports the learner’s personal construction of knowledge. They are effective communicators and collaborators and can create supportive, inclusive environments for learning. They are thoughtful educators who critically reflect on their practice
and are committed to lifelong learning in order to help all students achieve their fullest potential.

To achieve our mission, the St. Thomas Aquinas College teacher education program creates a caring, challenging environment for learning that supports each candidate’s development as an educator. In the college classroom, learning is a collaborative endeavor in which candidates speak and write about what they are learning, and question, analyze and discuss ideas with others who are at varying levels of expertise. We pride ourselves on providing each and every one of our candidates with personal attention. This prepares them for success from their very first day in a classroom.

I would be delighted to discuss our teacher education programs with you and look forward to hearing from you. You can reach me at (845) 398-4154 or via email at mgajria@stac.edu.
