Social Sciences Mission
Statement
The purpose of the Social
Science Major is educate students in the various areas of the
discipline by giving them access to the broad vistas encompassed by the
required course through the various offerings required for the major.
We will seek to further the ideas of citizenship, multicultural
understanding, and global perspectives in our student to help prepare
them for the global society of the future.
We will strive to
develop and expand in our students the ability to critically analyze
material and to synthesize it into a broad interdisciplinary world
view.
Through the courses
required for the Social Science Major, the Social Sciences Division
will strive to attain its ultimate goal of producing well educated,
critically thinking, multiculturally aware students. The Social Science
Major will produce such individuals.
Majoring in Social Sciences
The Major in Social
Sciences leads to the Bachelor of Sciences (B.S.) degree and requires
36 credit hours of study. All students must also complete the College
Core composed of a selection of English, Philosophy, Religious Studies,
Fine Arts, Music, Communication Arts and Foreign Language courses as
well as courses in Mathematics, Science, Computer Information Science,
and History. A series of Free Elective courses round out the 120
credits required for the degree.
The Faculty in the Social Sciences desires to reflect a synthesis of
tradition and progress, continuity and change, to meet the problems and
issues of the contemporary society. A major objective of the curriculum
is the attainment of a world view perspective by full realization of
steadily enlarging concepts and interdependence of people and nations,
their cultural heritage past and present, their societal relations in
America and the world.
The Major in Social
Sciences is completed with twelve (12) elective courses taken under
advisement. The major requires two entry-level courses: one course in
American History (HIST 101 or HIST 102) as well as one course in
European History (HIST 201 or HIST 202). One (1) additional American
History course as well as one (1) additional European or Non-Western
History course are also required. The student completes their program
of study in the major be selecting an additional eight (8) courses in
the various social sciences (Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography,
History, Recreation & Leisure Studies, Political Science,
Psychology, and Sociology) under advisement. (Of these last ten (10)
courses, al least 5 must be completed at the upper division level
(300/400 level)).
