Campbell R. Harvey’s Hypertextual Finance Glossary
www.duke.edu/~charvey/Classes/wpg/glossary.htm
Campbell (Global Financial Mgmt. at Duke and the University of Chicago) maintains this site which has over 8,000 entries and 18,000 hyperlinks. He co-wrote a 2002 Pulitzer Prize-winning book for financial writing. There is no real search function in this data base except for the alphabet. The user clicks on a letter and will be taken to financial terms within that letter. For example, under “G”, the user will be taken from “G” (the fifth letter of a Nasdaq stock symbol specifying that the issue is the first convertible bond of the company) to “Gypsy Swaps.” Other web sites such as Bloomberg, The New York Times and Yahoo use this glossary as well.
EDUCATION
The Educator’s Reference Desk
www.eduref.org/index.shtml
This is another excellent site produced by the Information Institute of Syracuse. The other sites under IIS are the Virtual Reference Desk, AskERIC, and the Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM). Within the Educator’s Reference Desk are 2000+ lesson plans, 3000+ links to online education information and 200+ question archive responses. On its Resource Guides page, I found links to classroom management, home schooling, special education, motivation, assessment, standards, and many more subject areas.
HUMANITIES
Lortel Archives: The Internet Off-Broadway Database
www.lortel.org/LLA_archive
Not to be confused with The Internet Broadway Database (Jan/Feb websites) this site is a catalog of produced off-B’Way shows that meet three criteria: played at a Manhattan theatre with a seating capacity of 100-499; intended to run a closed-ended or open-ended schedule of performances of more than one week; offers itself to critics and general audiences alike. As of this past January, 5000 shows have been compiled in this database with daily additions. The project is being done chronologically backwards- they have now reached the 1958 season with notable exceptions such as The Threepenny Opera and The Fantasticks. One can find information such as the list of original cast members, replacements, and number of performances. This database is under the aegis of the Lucille Lortel Foundation- named for the legendary actress. Another access site is www.IOBDB.com (Internet Off-B’Way Database).
NATURAL SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS
Weeds Gone Wild
www.nps.gov/plants/alien
The subheading for this site is Alien Plant Invaders of Natural Areas- exotic or non-native aquatics, trees, shrubs, herbs and vines that have been introduced, taken hold and threatens our ecosystem. A product of the National Park Service, these lists give a very detailed history of the plant ranges, descriptions, ecological threats, and management approaches and alternative native plants. It’s a colorful and up-to-date site.
SOCIAL SCIENCES
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum
www.ushmm.org
The mission of the USHMM is to “advance and disseminate knowledge” and preserve the memory of the Holocaust and the millions who perished. In addition to a detailed history, the museum’s website has many links to exhibitions, historical documents, photographs, personal histories (video & audio), bibliographies, archives and a survivor’s registry. There are learning aids for the teacher and student of the Holocaust. On its home page are links to information on current instances of global genocide.
