Cornell University International Workplace Studies Program (IWSP)
http://iwsp.human.cornell.edu/default.html
The IWSP was established in 1989 at Cornell in order to study Integrated Workplace Strategies (IWS). These strategies are examined as a “complex ecosystem.” Such issues as non-territorial, shared, team-oriented, and universal footprint offices, and remote collaborative work are researched. The benefit to organizations would reduce business costs, attract and retain the best-qualified staff, improve products and services and use information technologies that generate opportunities for working remotely, flexibly, and virtually.
EDUCATION
ALPS (Active Learning Practice for Schools)
http://learnweb.harvard.edu/alps
The educational philosophy of this site from the Harvard Graduate School of Education is “that students must be active, engaged, and thoughtful participants in their own education.” Educational researchers, curriculum designers and professors from Harvard set up this site so teachers and administrators from around the world can collaborate on-line. Within ALPS the user can find instructional tools and resources, model lessons, projects and activities, on-line workshops and forums, curriculum design tools, teaching for understanding and the teaching of thinking.
HUMANITIES
The 111 Greatest Acts of the Anglo-American Folk Tradition
www.wku.edu/~smithch/essays/FOLK.htm
Founded by Charles H. Smith (Professor and Science Librarian at Western Kentucky University) this list is a compilation using his own “variables” for ranking but he states these are evaluations of “significance” and not arbitrary. It is strictly from the Anglo-American tradition with performers having stood the test of time with an impact on other performers and styles and are reasonably well-known. Each artist has a web site linked to them, representative titles of their work and linking youtube.com files. First on the list is Woody Guthrie. You will also find Leadbelly, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Kingston Trio, The Carter Family, Sandy Denny, the McGarrigle Sisters, Townes Van Zandt, The Band, Mississippi John Hurt and Burl Ives. The “Honorable Mentions” (nos. 112-150) do not have links as the first 111. Mr. Smith adds a list of quite a few more artists for “consideration.”
