(SPARKILL,
NY - October 10, 2006) - St. Thomas Aquinas College
will host the 11thth annual Rockland Literacy Extravaganza
for teachers and college students on Saturday, October
21st, 7:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. in the College's Romano
Student Alumni Center. The event is a professional
development conference that focuses on teaching
reading and writing, grades Pre K-12. It is open
to the public.
The registration fee is $35 in advance, $25 for
Reading Council members, $45 at the door, and $25
for full-time college students. For more information

at the College and an organizer of the event, at

This year the College has partnered with the Rockland
County Storytelling Festival. Attendees will have
a choice of attending professional workshops or
storytelling performances. More than 30 literacy
workshops by noted educators will focus on exemplary
classroom practices.
The major keynote speakers include: Dr. Lesley Mandel
Morrow, a member of the International Reading Hall
of Fame; Jan Cheripko, award winning young adult
author; David Gonzalez, internationally acclaimed
storyteller; and Dr.Teri Lesesne, nationally noted
expert on teaching adolescent literacy.
"Our Literacy Extravaganza highlights research-based
best practices in literacy across the curriculum
that motivate students to learn and increase student
achievement," said Dr. Shaw.
This event is co-sponsored by St. Thomas Aquinas
College, Rockland Teachers' Center Institute, Rockland
Reading Council, Palisades Association for the Education
of Young Children, Rockland 21st Century Collaborative
for Children and Youth, William Paterson University,
and Manhattan College
