ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE TO HOST
LITERACY CONFERENCE FOR TEACHERS
 
(SPARKILL, NY - October 10, 2006) - St. Thomas Aquinas College will host the 11thth annual Rockland Literacy Extravaganza for teachers and college students on Saturday, October 21st, 7:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. in the College's Romano Student Alumni Center. The event is a professional development conference that focuses on teaching reading and writing, grades Pre K-12. It is open to the public.
The registration fee is $35 in advance, $25 for Reading Council members, $45 at the door, and $25 for full-time college students. For more information contact Dr. Michael Shaw, a professor of education at the College and an organizer of the event, at mshaw@stac.edu or 845-398-4079.
This year the College has partnered with the Rockland County Storytelling Festival. Attendees will have a choice of attending professional workshops or storytelling performances. More than 30 literacy workshops by noted educators will focus on exemplary classroom practices.
The major keynote speakers include: Dr. Lesley Mandel Morrow, a member of the International Reading Hall of Fame; Jan Cheripko, award winning young adult author; David Gonzalez, internationally acclaimed storyteller; and Dr.Teri Lesesne, nationally noted expert on teaching adolescent literacy.
"Our Literacy Extravaganza highlights research-based best practices in literacy across the curriculum that motivate students to learn and increase student achievement," said Dr. Shaw.
