(SPARKILL,
NY - October 5, 2006) - St. Thomas Aquinas College
received a $5,000 grant from the H.W. Wilson Foundation
to aid in the purchase of additional technology
equipment for the College's information literacy
program, announced Dr. L. John Durney, Provost
and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Information literacy is vital to all disciplines
in higher education. Students need to learn how
to acquire, analyze, and use the multitude of
information that is available on the Internet
and online databases.
St.
Thomas' information literacy program employs hands-on
learning by providing individual laptops for student
use. This method of instruction allows students
to actively engage in learning and work together
in a more interactive manner to share and reinforce
their learning with each other. Information literacy
instruction is offered to courses across the curriculum
at all levels of study. The grant will make possible
the purchase of additional laptops to enable librarians
to conduct concurrent and larger classes as the
program continues to expand. For more information
about the information literacy program at St.
Thomas Aquinas, contact the College's Admissions
Office at 845-398-4100.
