(SPARKILL, NY - October 3, 2006) - St. Thomas
Aquinas College will host Mitch Weiss, the 2004
Pulitzer Prize Winner for Investigative Reporting,
on Thursday, October 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the College's
Lougheed Library, announced Mr. Gerald McCarthy,
Professor of English. Weiss will be reading from
and talking about his new book "Tiger Force".
Weiss was awarded the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for
his work on the Toledo Blade's Tiger Force series.
Along with his colleague, Michael Sallah, they
discovered 22 classified documents about an elite
Army platoon in Vietnam that went on a rampage
for seven months in 1967, killing hundreds of
unarmed men, women and children. They revealed
that the military covered up the crimes.
Weiss and Sallah spent two years writing a book
about the platoon and the cover-up: "Tiger
Force: A True Story of Men and War".
The book, released in May 2006, has received rave
reviews from critics. Weiss has talked to college,
university and professional group audiences about
the platoon and the challenges facing U.S. troops
today. He has appeared on ABC-TV World News Tonight,
ABC News' Nightline, FoxNews' Hannity & Colmes,
The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and has been a
guest on National Public Radio's All Things Considered.
A
native New Yorker, Weiss spent 12 years with The
Associated Press, where he won various state and
national awards. He worked locally at The Rockland
Journal News and is now an editor with the Charlotte
Observer (NC).
This event is part of the program of speakers
for the Writers at Work Series. For information
