With roots in the physical and biological sciences, biochemistry is a rapidly evolving area of scientific endeavor that is situated at the forefront of modern science. The Biochemistry Major invites you to study life from a molecular level with a strong simultaneous emphasis on chemistry and physics.
Majoring in biochemistry prepares you for a range of vital careers – from scientific medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, to agriculture, nutrition and the food industry, environmental sciences, and the emerging area of biotechnology. One of the many strengths of our Biochemistry major is that we provide you with hands-on laboratory experience using modern instrumentation. In addition, every student will have the opportunity to conduct individualized research with one of our accomplished professors.
Advanced courses in the major include Genetics, Physical Chemistry, Microbiology, Biophysics, Neurobiology, Bioinformatics, and Immunology. As you move into the upper level courses in the major, you will study the details of the structure and function of all major macromolecules, and learn about such cutting edge topics as enzyme kinetics, enzyme mechanisms, and the biochemical basis of human disease.
