Summer Literacy Program and Summer Special Education Program
The St. Thomas Aquinas College Summer Literacy Program and Summer Special Education Program are designed to provide assistance to elementary and middle school children who are having difficulty learning reading and writing skills. Referrals are accepted for children who are currently attending either general or special education classes.
The focus for the program is on the development of reading and writing skills. An instructional plan is developed and implemented for each child based on assessment of academic needs. Teachers work with students both individually and in small groups.
Children attend half day sessions in the morning, 9:00am-12:00pm, Monday through Thursday, during the month of July.
All teachers are certified and are currently enrolled in the St. Thomas Aquinas College Graduate Program in either Literacy/Reading or Special Education. Members of the graduate education faculty supervise teachers.
Families must complete all parts of the APPLICATION form. In addition, the child’s teacher(s) must complete the TEACHER REFERRAL form. Return both parts to Mrs. Paula Hughes, Graduate Education Program Office Assistant.
You will receive confirmation that your application has been received.
Acceptance into the Program
All applications must be submitted by April 15th. The number of children accepted into the program is limited by the number of certified teachers enrolled in the STAC program. Families will be notified of a decision after May 1st.
A non-refundable fee of $200 is required when a child is accepted into the program. Please make checks payable to St. Thomas Aquinas College.
The program takes place on the campus of St. Thomas Aquinas College. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the program.
Families will receive further information, including schedule and specific location within the college, upon acceptance into the program.

If your child is accepted to the program and you take your child on vacation during July, you will not only disrupt the momentum and therefore, the effectiveness of the tutoring for your child, but you will jeopardize the tutor’s degree. Do not register for the program unless you have every intention of having your child participate throughout the month of July. Thank you for considering the needs of everyone involved in the program. Also, if your child has participated in the program for more than two years, he/she will not be accepted for a third term. We would like to give every child the opportunity to experience the benefits that our program offers.
If your child is accepted into the program and you decide not to enroll, please notify the Graduate Education Program secretary immediately or you will not be permitted to apply in future years.
