spacer STAC Summer Literacy Program

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Summer Literacy Program serves as the New York State required capstone practicum for graduate students who are certified teachers to become certified in Literacy. This enables them to be hired as reading specialists and literacy coaches in both New York and New Jersey.

The graduate student teachers work with school-age students who are struggling in reading and writing, grades 1-12. We use research-based “best practices” to create an individual program to increase motivation and achievement for each student based on comprehensive assessments.

Our approach focuses on creating meaningful reading and writing experiences based on student interest that teach all essential skills and strategies. We also create motivation by developing creative learning experiences including musical readers’ theater coordinated by Dr. Evan Matthews, assistant professor of music, reading to trained dogs that are certified to be listeners, and developing personal research projects based on interest that students present as Power Point presentations at our culminating author party.

This year we have added a number of new components. As a result of a generous grant from Entergy, Inc., Dr. Matthews has developed a program for students to Podcast readings of poetry and original work that can be accessed through the STAC web page.

We have also joined the international organization Pennies for Peace that will have our students collecting pennies to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. You can get more info on the web at www.penniesforpeace.org.

Parent evaluations of our program have been fabulous. If you have any questions about the STAC Summer Literacy Program, please contact Dr. Michael Shaw at 845-398-4079.
