This program is designed for candidates who have a Bachelor's degree and
wish to become teachers. Regular visits to local schools to observe classroom
instruction, complete case studies, tutor students and to become fully
acquainted with the realities of the 21st century classrooms are essential
components of the program. This fieldwork observation helps candidates
integrate theoretical principles and research with classroom practice.
The program
can be completed in 18 months. Upon satisfactory completion, candidates
are recommended for New York State initial teaching certification, Grades
1-6 or 7-12. After two years of successful teaching experience candidates
will be eligible for New York State professional teaching certification.
Based
on background and interests, candidates may select one of the three programs:
- Childhood Education
Grades 1-6 (39 credits)
- Childhood and
Special Education Grades 1-6 (45 credits)
- Adolescent Education
Grades 7-12 (36 credits) specializing in one of the following fields:
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Physics
- Social Studies
- English
- Mathematics
ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the requirements listed above
- A 30 credit concentration
or major in an area of liberal arts and sciences;
- Six credits in
each of the following: English, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language
and Mathematics.
- Additional nine
credits in liberal arts and sciences;
- Successful completion
of the LAST exam prior to admission
