“Being involved on campus is definitely the best part of the college experience.”
As a high-school senior, Theresa McKenna applied to six colleges. But when she visited St. Thomas Aquinas College the first time, she knew her search was over.
“I liked the STAC campus size; it is smaller than my high school,” Theresa says of her Long Island alma mater. “STAC just seemed to have a friendly environment and be a place where I would know everybody.”
She doesn’t regret her decision. Theresa has met dozens of people through her involvement on the Executive Student Government Board, where she serves as secretary and helps plan campus events like Springfest and Octoberfest. Theresa is also a campus tour guide, a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, and a Spartan Volunteer—a service-based campus organization that assists non-profit organizations in the surrounding communities.
“Getting involved has made college so much fun. I’ve met so many good friends I wouldn’t even have if I only went to class and did my homework,” Theresa explains. “And you don’t just meet students; you meet faculty and staff who connect you in important ways. You never know where meeting just one person can lead.”
As part of her program in graphic design, Theresa completed an internship in the marketing office of a Long Island utility company. While there, she helped design promotional materials, bill inserts, and flyers.
After graduation, Theresa would like to put her organizational skills and degree to use at The Walt Disney Company.
“Ultimately, I’d love to design movie posters,” Theresa says. “Graphic design gives me the freedom to depict things so people who see my work see what I want them to see. I think my degree will be the foundation for a really fun career.”
