If you choose to study childhood education (grades 1-6), you’ll take core education courses and courses in your choice of concentration in English, history, mathematics, science and technology, social sciences, or Spanish. Your education coursework will focus on:
- The nature of child development and factors that influence motivation and learning
- Classroom organization and management
- Evidence-based instructional methods that promote problem solving and critical thinking
- Use of assessment data to adjust instruction to promote student learning
- Content-specific methods to teach literacy, math, social studies, and science taught by content specialists
- Methods for collaboration with parents, colleagues, and the community
- Use of self evaluation for professional growth
When you graduate, you’ll be prepared to obtain New York State certification as a classroom teacher (grades 1-6).
