Post Masters Certificate in Literacy

The Post Masters in Literacy is ideal for teachers who would like to develop expertise in the area of Literacy and/or exam additional graduate credits. The program is a total of 15 credits. The program can be completed in one academic year but candidates may take longer if they wish. There are two-certificate options for candidates in this program:

         Post Masters Certificate in Literacy, Birth-Grade 6
         Post Masters Certificate in Literacy, Grades 5-12

Upon completion of the program, candidates will be recommended for NYS teaching certification in Literacy at the appropriate grade level. Teachers who complete this program will be able to work as reading specialist or literacy coach. Candidates admitted into the program will be assigned an advisor who will ensure that they meet the requirements for the grade level they teach.

Program Requirements

Post Masters in early ChilDhood and Childhood Literacy (birth-Grade 6) 

Admission Requirements

Master's Degree in Education: Early Childhood, Elementary, Special Education, Valid Teaching Certificate

Three graduate credits may be transferred in if they are equivalent to required coursework in the program. Grade must be B or higher. Course work must have been completed within the last five years. Candidates requesting courses to be transferred in must submit an official transcript and a course outline. Decisions regarding acceptance of transfer credits will be made by the Director of Graduate Education. 

Level I: Literacy Specialization (9 credits) 
GED 3301 Language Development: Foundation for Literacy
GED 3322 Reading and Writing in the Content Areas: Early Childhood and Childhood
GED 3325 Diagnostic Assessment and Intervention: Birth-Grade 6

Level II: Capstone Experiences (6 credits)
GED 6204 Organizing and Supervising the Literacy Program 
GED 6202 Literacy Practicum: Early Childhood and Childhood* 

*Prerequisites: all 3000 level course work, and approval of Director of Graduate Education

Note: Complete all course work and CST Literacy prior to practicum. 

 

POST MASTERS IN Middle Childhood AND Adolescence LITERACY (Grades 5-12)

Master's Degree in Education: Adolescence (7-12), Valid Teaching Certificate

Candidates are required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or Higher
