Summer STEAM Camps
St. Thomas Aquinas College's 2023 in-person Summer STEAM Camps for middle and elementary school students entering grades 5-9 offer something for everyone in Science, Technology, Arts, and Mathematics.
The series of STEAM Camps are made possible by the generous support of Orange & Rockland Utilities.
July 5-7: The Mathematics of Games
Have you ever wondered how to be that one person who always wins the game; or how to argue your way into getting what you want? Game Theory is the answer! Come to math camp to learn the art of counting (combinatorics), guessing the right answer (probability), and figuring out your opponent's moves (game theory). Come learn the math that teaches you not only how to win those games, but how to win in the business world as well!
Dates: Wednesday, July 5 - Friday, July 7
Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
(Cost $200)
July 10-14: Exploring the Link between Mathematics and Art
Campers will investigate the intersection of mathematics and art through a week of hands-on creative activities. We will explore how the Fibonacci Numbers relate to art and architecture, use ratios and proportions to design original sculptures, and scale up images to generate our own "Street Art". We will also examine the hidden mathematics in origami, fractals, perspective, and mosaics. By the end of camp, camper will have begun crafting a graphic novelette incorporating the use of mathematics in their illustrations.
Dates: Monday, July 10 - Friday, July 14
Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
(Cost $250)
July 17-21: Robotics and Coding
The Robotics and Coding camp is for students who have had previous experience with robots and/or coding in either a previous STEAM Camp at St. Thomas Aquinas College or in their school. The camp will explore how basic physics principles and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can be applied to the creation of robots that perform specific tasks. Students will work in two-person teams to construct robots with "claws" to move and transfer objects, robots that can navigate mazes, and robots that are able to search for and find objects. This camp will also include other STEM related activities, including flying drones, exploring virtual reality (VR) environments, resistance racing, and a STEM scavenger hunt. Enrollment is limited, so register early.
Dates: Monday, July 17 - Friday, July 21
Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
(Cost $425)
July 24-28: Sustainable Energy
Campers will learn about sources of sustainable energy through a combination of hands-on exploration and computer simulation. Topics of inquiry will include: wind turbines, solar ovens, photovoltaic, hydroelectric and fuel cells. Campers will have the opportunity to design, build and operate their own sustainable device. Camp will include a field trip to nearby Liberty Science Center to explore Energy Quest and other science exhibits.
Dates: Monday, July 24 - Friday, July 28
Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
(Cost $425)
