SUEZ Leadership Institute for Environmental Studies at St. Thomas Aquinas College

The SUEZ Leadership Institute for Environmental Studies will once again be held on Monday, July 22, 2019, through July 25, 2019, 9 AM to 3 PM at St. Thomas Aquinas College.

The program is open to high school students, grades 8 through 12 and provides them with an in-depth program focused on the study of water, the environment, energy, climate change, and sustainability. This gives students the unique opportunity to develop knowledge and skills to create a positive change on environmental issues in their own local communities and the planet.

“The College is committed to making strides in environmental awareness through education, advocacy, and action.  It is a focal area for our entire community.  The Environmental Leadership Institute affords us the ability to continue, and enhance our efforts while providing an exciting and valuable opportunity for students,” said Dr. Margaret Fitzpatrick, S.C., president of St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Chris Graziano, the vice president, and general manager of SUEZ New York added, “we are delighted to partner again with St. Thomas Aquinas College on this unique and innovative program. The Institute will continue to be a fun and engaging way to learn how to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to create positive change on environmental issues in one’s own community and beyond while earning three college credits.”

SUEZ, Inc. established the Institute in 2016 with a $150,000 grant.  Students engage in environmental inquiry and action through critical thinking and scientific methods while seeking solutions to challenges facing the environment.  They work in the College’s state-of-the-art science labs and engage in hands-on activities inside and outside of the classroom.  The program comprises instruction by faculty members, guest lectures by external expert speakers, and field trips to a variety of sites including a water treatment plant.

Nicole S., a student from Bardonia, NY, who took part in the 2018 program shared, “New generations need to be taught through programs like this that the environment needs to be protected and needs to thrive for everyone and everything to survive.”
